What to wear when running in cold weather

If you are an active person, then cold weather will not prevent you from doing your exercise like running or jogging. It is really a matter of wearing the right clothes to suit the temperatures and climate. In the following section, we will explain how you should dress up when running in cold or even freezing weather.

The basics

When running, it is important to wear the right clothes and shoes so that you will have a comfortable experience. After all, who wants to come home to blisters, back pain and shin splits? Equally, running in the cold weather necessitates that you wear the right gear. Here are a couple of reminders what to wear whilst running in cold temperatures.

  • Legging and/or tights suitable for running
  • Layering is key when running in extreme temperature so you can keep as much of that body heat as possible. But, it is important to keep in mind that you should not also wear too much clothing as you should be as light as possible when doing the activity. Look for lightweight fabric that will not retain moisture when you are sweating.

  • Moisture wicking undershirt
  • The first layer of your clothing should be warm enough and should not retain water when you sweat. Like your running tights, you should purchase a top made from lightweight fabric. Your top should have reflective strips so that you are visible to others as well as drivers on the road.

  • Pair of gloves
  • It is important to keep your hands warm as you cannot really put your hands in your pockets as you run. Get a thin pair of gloves to protect your extremities from the bitter cold.

  • Beanie or cap
  • Don't lose body heat by running without protecting your head. Be a baby and cover you head in a beanie or cap. You can also add a headband for good visibility, just in case you sweat too much.

    Avoid

Certain attires, in general, should not also be worn when running. These include flimsy underwear such as thongs, bikini, tops with seams, low-intensity sports bras as well as unsuitable trainers, cotton socks and fleece jackets.
