The Oscars 2012: fashion hits and misses

The Oscars may be a celebration of film, but there's little doubt that what really gets chins wagging is the star style on display. Here is our run down of the best and worst dressed on the world's most important catwalk...

The hits

Penelope Cruz in Armani: Penelope Cruz radiated old world glamour in a custom Armani Prive organza gown. She accessorised the off-shoulder dress with Chopard jewels.

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace: So all the talk may have been about her OTT posing and that weird leg-baring stance, but there's no denying that Angie's black, cut-to-the-hip velvet dress looked absolutely stunning.

Cameron Diaz in Gucci Premiere: Showing off her California tan and toned arms, Cameron's putty-coloured Gucci dress was sophisticated enough for the red carpet while still fun enough to make her look like her easy-going surfer-girl self.

The misses

Sanda Bullock in Marchesa: Sandy's black and white dress was perfectly lovely... but just not on her. It was ill fitting and too over-powering for her delicate features.

Anne-Sophie Blon: Anne-Sophie Blon's dress was an unfortunate choice for the normally stylish actress. The wrinkled charcoal fabric made it look more bin liner than glam gown, while the belt did little to disguise the fact that there was simply too much fabric.

Viola Davis in Vera Wang: We loved the emerald colour of Viola Davis' red carpet dress, but the shape and fabric were reminiscent of a crumpled quality street wrapper - there was simply too much going on.
