How to wash trainers in the washing machine

Often, trainers leave us scratching our heads whether we should throw them in the washer or clean them by hand, the latter of which is not such a pleasant alternative. But, yes, it is possible to get those trainers squeaky clean without spending a lot of time.

The first thing you have to do is to check if your trainers can be washed in the machine or not. After all, you don't want to ruin your favourite shoes or spend money to get a new pair.

Before putting them in the machine, remove the laces and wash them separately. Give those dirty laces a good scrub to clean them.

Check that your trainers do not have mud or other debris that might have gotten caught on the soles. Use a toothbrush to remove dirt stuck in between the grooves of the soles. Gum can also get caught on the soles so do your best to remove these sticky things.

Soak your shoes in a pail of warm water and a dash of liquid soap. This will serve as a pre-wash so that your water will not be too muddy when you run the machine.

Put your trainers in the mesh bag along with the laces before putting them in the machine. If you are washing towels, PE kits and other stuff, load them along with your trainers. This will soften the impact or banging on the machine.

Dry your trainers outdoors using the sun to speed up the drying process. During winter, put them beside radiators or even behind the fridge where there is heat.

Do not at all costs, put your trainers in the dryer just to speed up the drying process. This will surely destroy your shoes. The washing machine does a pretty good job of removing excess water so your trainers should dry in a day or less.
