Michelle disappoints Uncle Sam

You've got to feel a little bit sorry for Michelle Obama. For most of us, getting dressed up for a party is fun. Every now and again your hours of work may go unnoticed (or god forbid, even criticised) by your nearest and dearest, but that sort of behaviour can be easily dealt with - three days of silent treatment followed by a spending spree on his credit card. For Michelle, however, wearing the wrong choice of dress to an event can result in the sort of public disapproval usually reserved for women who put cats in bins.

The First Lady's decision to wear outfits by two British designers - Alexander McQueen and Roksanda Ilincic - at last week's meeting with Chinese president Hu Jintao has prompted widespread criticism for the American fashion industry.

First to voice his criticisms was Oscar de la Renta who stated: 'the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade — American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?' Now Vogue reports that the Council of Fashion Designers of America has stepped into the furore by commenting 'we were surprised and a little disappointed not to be represented for this major state dinner'.

Let's hope Mr Obama was a little more complimentary.
