5 minutes with...
We love Calvin Klein's super hot fashion director, Francisco Costa (uhmm, we want that name!) So spend five minutes on the lounge with him, courtesy of US Vogue:
Was it daunting for you when you took on the top posting at Calvin Klein?
'Yes, I never truly understood the magnitude of the role when I started at the company. The brand has a unique language and point of view that has always been relevant. Each season I strive to design a forward-thinking and effortless collection with a very clean minimalist aesthetic.'
Your most recent spring collection links wonderfully wearable shapes with clever, modernist twists, such as three dimensional surfaces to many fabrics. What was the philosophy behind it?
'My initial inspiration came from Ferne Jacobs, an American fibre artist and basket maker, who is best known for using an ancient basket-weaving technique in her work, twisting threads to create sculptures. I’m inspired by many things, from landscapes to textiles. Art and architecture always influence my design process.'
What ignited your love of fashion?
'My love of fashion stemmed from my mother’s passion for it.'
In your role, what pressures and challenges do you specifically face in negotiating the economic downturn?
'It is our responsibility as an industry to work more closely with our fabric and production suppliers, to produce garments in a more economical manner without compromising on design and fabric.'
What has been your proudest moment?
'I would have to say being awarded the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt 2009 Fashion Design Award. I am very proud I was chosen and it’s reassuring and humbling to have your work recognised by such a distinguished group of cultural figures.'
Tell us about the launch of the main line through Myer. What is the one item of clothing every woman will need in her wardrobe?
'I’m very excited women will be able to buy Calvin Klein Collection in Australia again. There are many pieces that will appeal to Australian women, especially the light and airy dresses.'
Outside of fashion what are you most passionate about and why?
'I love to garden and cook whenever I get the chance and escape anywhere that’s peaceful and quiet. My philosophy on living well is to always stay positive in life.'
